Path of Exile 2: League Preparation And Character Progression — Planning Walkthrough

Every fresh league in Path of Exile 2 puts players back at the same starting line, with a reset economy and characters built from nothing. A little planning before launch day turns that reset from a scramble into a steady climb, and this walkthrough breaks the process into stages you can prepare one at a time.

Why leagues change how you plan

Path of Exile 2 is Grinding Gear Games' action RPG, in early access since December 2024. At Gamescom 2026 the studio announced the 1.0 full release for 11 December 2026, when the game also becomes free-to-play, and a new sword-and-shield class, the Duelist, arrives with that release.

Leagues and seasons periodically reset the economy. That means currency, items and trade prices start from zero each time, and the early days of a league reward players who already know what they want to build. For 1.0 specifically, expect a large influx of new players and a new class, so plans made from earlier early-access experience may need adjustment.

Set your goals for the league

Players start a league for different reasons, and the right plan depends on yours. Some want to see a new class, some want to reach the hardest endgame content, and some mainly enjoy trading in a fresh economy. Deciding this first keeps you from copying a plan built for someone with different goals.

  • Exploring: pick a build that looks fun and accept slower progress.
  • Pushing endgame: choose a proven starter and plan a second build for later.
  • Trading and crafting: focus on understanding the economy as it forms in the first days.

Stage one: choose a build before launch

Builds in Path of Exile 2 revolve around skill gems and the support gems socketed into those skills. A good league starter is usually one that works with modest gear and does not depend on rare items. When reading build guides, look for the patch or league they were written for, since balance changes can turn a reliable starter into a weak one.

Write down a simple plan: the main skill, the supports you will add as they become available and a fallback skill in case the first one feels wrong. Specific gem names and drop rates are not covered here because they change; confirm them in current patch notes and community references.

If the Duelist interests you for 1.0, treat any early guide as provisional. A brand-new class has no track record in a live league, so leave room to change direction once you have played it for a few hours.

Stage two: pace your character progression

Progression usually happens in phases: getting through the campaign, stabilizing the build with better gear, then pushing into harder endgame content. Each phase has a different bottleneck.

  • Campaign: survival and damage matter more than optimization. Upgrade whatever is weakest.
  • Stabilizing: look at defenses and resistances, and start using trade or crafting carefully as the economy forms.
  • Endgame: refine the build, and decide whether to keep improving this character or start a second one.

Plan time as well as power. If you can only play a few evenings a week, a sturdy, simple build will usually progress further than a fragile one that needs constant attention. Setting a modest target for each week also makes it easier to notice when you are stuck and need to adjust gear or skills rather than simply play more.

Self-directed play versus optional assistance

Most players progress on their own or in parties with friends, and the game is designed around that. Solo play is slower at the start but builds understanding of your character, which pays off when the build needs adjusting.

Some players look at outside help when time is short. Service pages for Path of Exile 2 progression assistance outline what that kind of help covers, which can be useful for understanding the options. It is still a trade-off: someone else playing your character means you skip the learning, and real-money trading of items or currency breaches Grinding Gear Games' terms. Boosting and account sharing can also violate the terms of service and lead to penalties.

Checklist before using any service

  1. Does it require your account login, or can the goal be reached in a party instead?
  2. Does it involve buying items or currency for real money, which GGG's terms prohibit?
  3. Are timelines, refunds and responsibility for account penalties written down?
  4. Does the payment method offer any buyer protection?
  5. Would a guild or party run get you the same result?

Launch-day preparation in brief

Before the league opens, keep a short list: your chosen build and backup skill, a few current guides with their dates noted, and a rough target for each progression phase. Then play the first days with flexibility. Early league conditions often differ from expectations, and players who adapt their plan tend to progress more smoothly than those who follow it rigidly.
